Goals and objectives
To education the Aboriginal people in remote communities outside of Newman on the harm of tobacco use and decrease their tobacco consumption.
Strategies
The partnership between COAG and PAMS has been ongoing since 2010. The strategies implemented thus fas has seen Community Store comparisons completed in partnerships with Diabetes WA, PUYU PAKI- Don’t smoke- Give it up, partnership with a local Elder with the naming of the Give it up smoking program.
The local shopping centre displaying ‘no smoking’ signs, sponsorship with local sports clubs including football, netball and soccer and consisted of juniors and seniors players; ages 5+ up to 40 years of age.
Strategies include consulting with community members, identifying smokers who have acknowledged that they want to quit. The use of Smokerlyzer and the no-smoker quitting smoking calculator helps smokers to understand the extent of their dependence on nicotine and motivates them to quit, and visually showing each individual the spending of their money financially.
