  • To increase the perceived urgency for smoking cessation in Aboriginal people
  • To pilot a culturally appropriate smoking cessation support (with free provision of NRT where appropriate) to Wheatbelt Aboriginal people
  • To encourage the Aboriginal community to have smoke free environments and events, thereby reducing exposure to passive smoking (particularly for children)
  • To increase the perceived urgency of WACHS Aboriginal staff to stop smoking
  • Increase the skills of Aboriginal Health Professionals to assist clients with smoking cessation (especially the use of Brief Motivational Conversations).

Strategies

No More Nyumree program takes a comprehensive approach, implementing a range of strategies to target the Wheatbelt community as a whole including:

  • Culturally appropriate program, empowering community through education of tobacco cessation
  • Developed a 12 week culturally appropriate smoking cessation and support service delivered to clients Wheatbelt wide
  • Providing training to Aboriginal Health workforce on Tobacco Cessation
  • Social marketing campaign including production of DVD
  • Health promotion activities including working with youth, men’s and women’s healthy lifestyle groups, Diabetes and other clinics & community events
  • Developing and distributing smoke free promotional resources and information including: Motivational materials (DVD, log book, Goanna artwork t-shirt)
  • Handouts for children (stickers, colouring pencils, wrist bands, tattoos, Frisbees)
